In today’s world, governments are more readily able to manipulate the public’s perceived reality, just as they would an audience in a play. Separating out the front- and backstage enables actors to give their audience the impression that they are meeting standards expected of them while behaving in an entirely different manner to achieve their underlying interests.

If one looks closely enough at the patterns, prostitution in South Asia inadvertently leads to sex slavery and forced prostitution. In South Asia, there are no comprehensive statistics available to identify what percentage of women in prostitution are victims of sex slavery and what percentage enter the profession voluntarily — a question which quickly becomes a loose assumption based on illiteracy, poverty, loss of traditional livelihoods, and wide economic disparities.

Despite major conflicts between India and Pakistan, the one constant rule has been the sanctity of the de facto borders in the contested territory of Kashmir. Such an understanding has ensured that both nations, while heavily active on the border, dare not violate it whatsoever, to the extent that individuals meeting in border crossings into the region usually maintain cordial relations. However, India and Pakistan’s de facto policy on the Kashmir region has changed dramatically over the last few years, perhaps irrevocably.
